Natural Gas Leaks, Odors or Emergencies

Chattanooga Gas Company Ready for Cold Weekend

January 17, 2003

Chattanooga, Tenn. -- Chattanooga Gas Company (CGC), which delivers natural gas to many southern Tennesseans’ homes and businesses, says it is prepared for the expected cold weather this weekend and will have all field crew personnel available to make sure customers will be able to stay warm.

Extra field crews will be on standby over the holiday weekend to ensure natural gas is delivered to Tennesseans in the CGC service area safely and efficiently. These crews also will be available to turn on gas service for those customers who may not currently be connected, provided they have made the appropriate arrangements with Chattanooga Gas Company.

Customers who experience problems with their natural gas heat over the weekend should call CGC at 1-800-427-5463 (toll free).

Larry Buie, CGC general manager, said “there is plenty of natural gas in the CGC system to get Tennesseans through this colder-than-normal winter.

“However, if you have any problems, call us and we will dispatch a crew to investigate,” Buie said.

Buie also urged consumers to use caution when operating or adjusting heating appliances. He said anyone who suspects a natural gas leak should leave the premises immediately and call CGC at 1-800-427-5463.

Natural gas is colorless and odorless, so a substance called mercaptan is added to give gas a distinctive “rotten egg” smell. While natural gas is non-toxic, it is combustible, said Buie.
