Chattanooga Gas Company Invests in Its Community, Announces 2003 Grants

April 16, 2003

Atlanta, GA -- In keeping with its tradition of giving back to the communities it serves, AGL Resources Inc. (NYSE: ATG), parent company of Chattanooga Gas Company (CGC), announced grants totaling $60,000 for low-income energy assistance programs and economic development projects in Chattanooga.

Paula G. Rosput, AGL Resources (AGLR) chairman, president and chief executive officer, and Larry Buie, general manager of CGC, announced the following Chattanooga-area grant awards:

  • City of Chattanooga Department of Human Services -- $50,000 for Low Income Home Energy Assistant Program (LIHEAP)
  • Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce Foundation -- $10,000 for "Tell the World!" campaign to market Chattanooga
The community grants were announced at an event held Tuesday night at the AGLR corporate headquarters building in Atlanta to recognize its nonprofit partners and state and community leaders in the areas in which the company does business: Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia and Texas. The guest list included elected and appointed officials as well as community leaders and company board members.

Accepting the grants were Patsy Hazlewood, regional director of BellSouth and president of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, and Jo Anne Watkins, coordinator of the Chattanooga Department of Human Services LIHEAP. In addition to these grants, CGC has contributed $8,600 to Project Warm Neighbors, an energy assistance program in Cleveland and Chattanooga, since November 2002.

AGLR also announced additional grants to various community, economic development and education groups in the communities it serves in Georgia, Virginia and Texas.

"Our company takes great pride in the deep roots we have in our communities," said Rosput. "From our employees volunteering with the March of Dimes Walk to our corporate donations to the Chamber and to LIHEAP, we are committed to investing back into the Chattanooga community."

Rosput began hosting the community leadership dinner three years ago as an opportunity for members of the AGLR board and management team to get to know leaders of the communities served by the company's subsidiaries. The company holds it annual shareholder meeting today.
