Warm-up to winter temperatures with Chattanooga GasCombining heating assistance and a free programmable thermostat can help customers save money

November 23, 2010

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – November 23, 2010 – The freezing temperatures of winter can put a big dent in a monthly budget, so Chattanooga Gas is offering a few ways to help customers save money on their monthly heating bills.

The first involves federal funds available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP. This program offers a one-time payment to a resident’s monthly heating bill regardless of the energy source used in the home.

“LIHEAP funds are available to qualified residents and can help offset the costs of heating a home in the winter,” said Steve Lindsey, vice president and general manager, Chattanooga Gas. “Residents who live on a fixed income should not have to choose between paying for food, medicine or heat.”

LIHEAP funds are administered locally by the Chattanooga Department of Social Services and are available for applicants who have a yearly household income less than or equal to 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, published each year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Chattanooga Gas is also doing its part to help residents stay warm this winter. The company has donated $50,000 to energy assistance programs in Hamilton and Bradley counties this year. These local funds can also be used to help customers pay monthly heating bills.

In addition to donating heating funds, Chattanooga Gas is offering a free programmable thermostat to customers under the company’s new energySMART program.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, by using the recommended manufacturer settings on a programmable thermostat, consumers can save up to $180 a year on their homes heating and cooling bills.

“Our company is committed to providing our customers with tools they need to lower their heating costs, save energy and stay warm this winter,” said Lindsey.

Residents interested in learning how to apply for LIHEAP, or any other heating assistance program, should call the Bradley-Cleveland Community Services at 423-479-4111 or Hamilton County Social Services at 423-209-6800.
