Significant increase in energy assistance funds available this yearChattanooga Gas advises residents to apply early for heating assistance October 20, 2008
Chattanooga, Tenn. – October 20, 2008 – President Bush and Congress released $5.1 billion in funds nationally to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) this year, an increase of 36 percent over last year. These additional funds, more than $80 million in Tennessee, can reduce energy costs for qualified residents who need assistance. Chattanooga Gas urges its customers to sign up to participate and make sure they will stay warm this winter.
"Low- and fixed-income residents need to apply early,” said Larry Buie, Region Manager, Chattanooga Gas. "Getting the proper paperwork completed as early as possible can expedite the process of getting funds before the temperatures begin to plummet.”
The application process in Tennessee has already begun, and runs through June 15, 2009 or until funds are no longer available. Chattanooga Gas advises residents to apply now.
Residents interested in learning how to apply for LIHEAP, or any other heating assistance program, should call 2-1-1 or 1-800-510-3102.
Chattanooga Gas, through its parent company AGL Resources and the AGL Resources Private Foundation, donated $50,000 to energy assistance programs in Tennessee this past year. The funds are used to assist residents in paying their monthly heating bills.
