Chattanooga Gas employees celebrate Earth Day

April 20, 2009

Chattanooga, Tenn. – April 20, 2009 – An Earth Day spring cleaning is scheduled for Chattanooga Gas this week. Employees plan to show their support of Earth Day by picking up trash along Olan Mills Drive. The clean-up begins at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 22.

Employees will also continue their annual recycling drive. Bins have been set-up at Chattanooga Gas for employees to bring items from home.  Mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic soft drink bottles, and detergent bottles are some of the items being collected. These items will be delivered to the Orange Grove Center, a private non-profit organization serving adults and children with developmental disabilities

Earth Day was established to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment, with the goal of a healthy, sustainable environment including the promotion of clean energy.

“As a natural gas company, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment.” said Larry Buie, region manager, Chattanooga Gas. “Our employees who participate in Earth Day initiatives reflect that commitment to our community.”

Earth Day is also a good reminder to Chattanooga Gas customers to implement a home energy audit. An audit will show how much energy a home consumes. Discovering and correcting efficiency problems can save a home owner significant amounts of money over time and reduce their carbon footprint.

“By using high efficiency natural gas appliances, Chattanooga Gas customers are already reducing their impact on the environment,” said Buie.

According to the Department of Energy, homes using natural gas appliances produce about 40 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than homes using electric appliances for these services.
