As temperatures fall, Chattanooga Gas shares resources to help customers affordably meet energy needs

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Nov. 15, 2019 – Chattanooga Gas is reminding customers of important financial assistance programs available to help them meet their energy needs this winter. As temperatures decrease, thermostats tend to go up, and some household budgets cannot keep up with the demands of using more fuel to heat a home.

Online enrollment for eligible customers is underway for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP is federally funded through a grant program from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, providing monetary relief to families with incomes below 150% of the poverty line.

“Chattanooga Gas is committed to helping ensure families have the peace of mind they deserve, knowing that financial assistance is available to them should they need it,” said Bryan Batson, president of Chattanooga Gas. “We are actively working to get the word out about the home heating assistance programs available in the Chattanooga region, and we encourage families to weatherize their homes and make them more efficient to stay comfortable while saving on their energy bills.”

Additional support is available through several other local organizations throughout Tennessee. Interested residents should call Bradley-Cleveland Community Services at 423-479-4111 or the Hamilton County Department of Youth and Family Development at 423-643-6434 for help.

Chattanooga Gas also has energy efficient tools and resources for natural gas customers seeking more control over their energy consumption and heating bills. For instance, weatherization is one of the easiest ways to make a home more energy efficient and drive down energy costs. Below is a list of tips customers can use to make their homes more energy efficient:

  • Insulate Outlet Gaskets: Place caulk or foam between the electrical box and drywall on switches and outlets located on exterior walls. Then place these foam gaskets behind the plates for a good, airtight seal.
  • Seal Windows and Leaks with Weather-Stripping: For homes with attic access, make sure the door is insulated and seals tight, much like a refrigerator. Use weather-stripping and screen door latches for a snug seal.
  • Cover Vents: Help keep cold air out of your basement or crawl space by covering vents during the winter. Use foundation vents to keep floors warmer and heating bills lower.
  • Insulate Pipes: Insulated pipes heat water more quickly, keep hot water in pipes warmer and reduce waste.
  • Install a Water Heater Jacket Cover: A water heater jacket can reduce up to 15% off the costs of heating water by preventing energy loss.
