Chattanooga, Tenn. – Oct. 31, 2018 – Every family deserves the peace of mind that they will be able to keep their homes warm. As temperatures continue to drop Chattanooga Gas is committed to providing resources to customers who may need assistance with their winter heating bills.

Beginning Nov. 1 eligible customers may begin enrolling in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, LIHEAP. LIHEAP is 100 percent federally funded through a grant program from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services. Money is available for applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. Income levels must not exceed 150 percent of the poverty level. Customers who are interested in applying for LIHEAP can click here to learn more about eligibility requirements.

Residents interested in other heating assistance programs should call Bradley-Cleveland Community Services at 423-479-4111 or Hamilton County Department of Youth and Family Development at 423-757-5541.

Chattanooga Gas also has energy efficient tools and resources for natural gas customers seeking more control over their energy consumption and heating bills.

Weatherization is one of the easiest ways to make your home more energy efficient. You can drive down your energy costs by making sure your home is sealed properly and that you’re not wasting water.

Below is a list of tips natural gas customers also can use to prepare for the winter heating season:

  • Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat allows customers to set the temperature in their home while they are away and increase the temperature when they return.
  • Inspect windows and doors for drafts. Use caulk or sealant to insulate areas where a draft might be felt.
  • Open drapes and shades. Using sunlight is a great way to naturally heat the home during the day.
  • Close the flue to the fireplace. Closing the flue will prevent warm air from escaping the home.
