Chattanooga Gas joins utilities nationwide in providing tips to avoid utility scams
Chattanooga, Tn. – Nov. 21, 2025 – Chattanooga Gas is joining more than 150 U.S. and Canadian energy companies to raise awareness about deceptive practices used by imposters and empower consumers with the information they need stay safe.
National Utility Scam Awareness is observed each November and families and businesses are urged to remain vigilant to imposters who threaten to turn off utility service if payment is not immediately made.
Knowing this is a busier time of the year, scammers are likely to use urgency and demands to receive money or sensitive details. Scammers have expanded their schemes in the digital space. Traditionally using technology to call using a number that looks like the name and number of a legitimate business, imposters are now also sending QR codes and instructing recipients to make payments or demanding payment through mobile banking apps and email.
Chattanooga Gas strongly encourages customers to be skeptical if anyone:
- Threatens to cut off their natural gas service if immediate payment is not made
- Requests that payments be made from a single method, such as a debit card, pre-paid card, or checking account
- Claims they have overpaid and their banking account or credit card number is needed for a refund
- Informs them of a need to vacate their home so that a meter or other natural gas equipment can be replaced
- Suggests on social media that their bill will be covered by a charity after they make a partial payment by way of a wire transfer
Chattanooga Gas will never use aggressive or intimidating tactics to pressure customers into making a payment toward their natural gas bill. Customers who suspect or experience fraud should contact local authorities, and then call the customer care center phone number listed on their billing statement.
In addition, whenever a field service representative or one of our contractors visits a customer’s home or business, they will provide Chattanooga Gas identification.
