We’re building a clean energy future with innovative, low-carbon solutions.

Chattanooga Gas is committed to reducing our emissions, protecting our natural environment and promoting social wellbeing and safety. We have a goal to achieve net-zero operational GHG emissions by 2050. To work toward this goal, we’re deploying tools and infrastructure modernization and engaging with like-minded organizations and partners to advance clean energy initiatives.

3 Key Takeaways

In 2024, we completed our first RNG purchase, reducing our carbon emissions by nearly 1,900 metric tons CO2e, roughly equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 1,900 acres of US forests for one year.

Since 2023, we have supplied 100% of our residential and small commercial customers with Next Generation Gas, reducing methane emissions from natural gas production by nearly 19,000 metric tons CO2e.

From 2022 through 2024, customers who participated in our energy efficiency programs have received nearly $20k in rebate incentives and avoided more than 16 annual metric tons of CO2e emissions.

Efficient Homes and Businesses

We support emissions reductions and increased energy efficiency in homes and businesses. To help our customers be more energy efficient, Chattanooga Gas initiated an energy efficiency program in 2022 focused on residential customers and expanded the program to commercial customers in 2024. These programs offer rebates to upgrade to energy efficient furnaces, water heaters and boilers. From 2022 through 2024, customers have received rebates on 58 energy efficient appliances, totaling nearly $19,000 in incentives and avoiding more than 16 metric tons of CO2e emissions annually.

Cleaner Molecules

To reach a lower-carbon future, we are seeking opportunities to source natural gas from suppliers who have committed to lowering the emissions from their operations and ways to support renewable fuels. Renewable natural gas (RNG) is a primarily carbon-neutral or carbon-negative source of gas derived from methane from organic material in landfills, crops, food and animal waste. This methane can be integrated into existing infrastructure, providing clean energy for cooking, heating and clothes drying. In 2024, we completed our first RNG purchase, reducing our carbon emissions by nearly 1,900 metric tons of CO2e, roughly equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 1,900 acres of US forests for one year.

Superior Operations

We leverage the latest technologies to prevent, identify and mitigate emissions. As we work towards our net-zero goal, we’re also engaging with the supply chain to help others do the same. Our parent company, Southern Company Gas, was one of eight founding members of ONE Future, a coalition of 50+ natural gas companies working to reduce methane emissions across the natural gas supply chain. In addition, we are continuing to seek opportunities to purchase Next Generation Natural Gas, traditional natural gas that is sourced, transported and distributed by those committed to reducing methane emissions. CGC has supplied 100% of our residential and small business customers with Next Generation Natural Gas since 2023 and continues to do so.

Lowering Transportation Emissions

We employ a broad range of solutions to help us deliver affordable and accessible fuel to homes and businesses across our service area while reducing emissions. By embracing alternative fuels like renewable natural gas (RNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), we can significantly enhance our sustainability efforts. These fuels offer lower emissions compared to traditional options, contributing to cleaner air and reduced environmental impact. In 2020, across the entire United States, 3.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions were avoided by fueling vehicles with RNG.

Supporting Supply Chain Advancements

As stewards of our community, we prioritize reducing operational emissions. As we work toward lowering emissions, we’re also evaluating the natural gas industry supply chain to help others do the same. We are committed to supporting the NextGenGas Coalition’s initiative to source from companies actively reducing methane emissions. Since 2023, we have supplied 100% of our residential and small commercial customers with Next Generation Gas, reducing methane emissions from natural gas production by nearly 19,000 metric tons of CO2e.
